The Blue Willow design depicts the Mandarin legend of a rich man whose daughter falls in love with his servant. To keep them apart, the man secures his willow-draped pagoda with a great fence and vows to marry his daughter to a duke. Neither the fence nor the father’s fury can manage to keep the lovers apart. The father pursues them through the garden, over the fence, and onto the bridge where they transform into doves and fly away to a secret haven.
The Blue Willow design depicts the elements of this legendary love story — the weeping willow, pagoda, fence, bridge, and the doves. With its origins in England, circa 1780, the Blue Willow design has been one of the most popular and collected dinnerware designs in the world for over 200 years.
